Information change?

In 2005, the nature of information is much different that it was even 20 years ago.  How has information changed over the past 20 years?

In the past twenty years I feel the nature of information is and yet isn't much different than it was twenty years ago. We as humans are overall still primarily interested in the "NationalEnquirer"  type topics and style of information. What has changed I feel is the objectivity of deliverence, the credibility of facts and reporters, and the speed by which this information is delivered to us. Speed does not always allow us time to research and verify our information. The above has resulted in much mis-information about people and issues, and the inability to see the forest through the trees.Having access to a wide spectrum of information will allow people a greater ability to form a better opinion on a subject, and a more knowledgeable background on a topic, provided they are taught how to weed out the mis-information.

Information has changed in quality and quanity. People now have access to worldwide information within a matter of seconds.  The scary part is the quality of information is not being monitored.  It is more convient and time saving for everyone, but there times when gathering information in the old fashion way is more reliable.   I am amazed to watch my children communicate with their friends on MSN, but I have watched many friendships have conflicts because everyone can read the comments being made and it is very easy to pretend you are someone else.  Where 20 years ago from home old fashion gossip could just be shared on a phone and predators were not just a click away.

Twenty years ago most information was gotten from books. Over the past 20 years information has changed so rapidly that many written non-fiction items are outdated within years, some even months after being printed. That is why in a library books are weeded after so many years. With all the advances in technology today information is seen as changing daily on the web. Because of the rapid changing of information, I try to have students use both sources when doing projects.

Information is more accessible.  You can get more up to date information quickly by using technology.

Information 20 years ago was not instantaneous like it is today.  In the past, information was only accessible through written works, TV, audio, and radio and it took much time to research and access the information. Whereas today we can have the information right as it is happening from the web. Current information is at our fingertips at all times and is much easier and faster to access.

The magnitude and volume of information is overwhelming. There is a predominance of primary source information. Information is available immediately. There are other places to get information quickly besides the television or radio.

20 years ago I was in like fourth or fifth grade in a rural school district.  Information came from books, magazines, newspapers, network tv.  We had no internet, no CNN.  Classroom computers were used for word processing and playing Oregon Trail.  Looking things up for a report took footwork since we often had to use more than one library if we wanted to verify information through multiple sources.  On the plus side, all information we had access to had been verified through an editor.  We were able to trust our sources.  That could also be a negative thing in that we were never really given much opportunity to challenge what we found and build those critical reading skills.  The sheer amount of information that is available to today's students is amazing and rather overwhelming.

Information has changed over the past 20 years in that it is readily available to many more people. The technology that has developed has enabled up to the minute details in current events.  Growing up in a small town, we often learned of important information through the newspaper which came in the mail a day late.  Now, you can log on to the computer and get the latest news.  The drawback is that you must trust the source of the information.

Technology has changed in the last 20 years because of the ability of the public to submit information to the web, and also to access information.  It is easier for the public to access information, such as magazines, neswspapers, etc., though the information may not always be accurate.  More research can be done in the home because of internet access on PC's.

Information is more current and up to date. More search engines. Not only information but also images.  More computers for students to use. Easy access in the classrooms. Provides teachers with accessability to enhancing their curriculum and to meet the goals of the Illinois teaching standards.

Certainly, information itself has not changed over the past 20 years, but our access to that information has greatly changed.   Encyclopedias, atlases and newspapers were the sources we used to find what we were looking for back then.  We still have that information available today, but with everything changing so drastically and so quickly the internet is the way to go.  Publishers can't keep up with the changes in our society as quickly as we want the information.
