Day 1 Evaluation
Please describe the most important thing you learned today. Also, describe the most important thing you still need to learn to be able to implement the process of digital storytelling in your classes. Please add any other comments that you would like to express. Thanks, Dave.
COMMENTS
I think my original motivation for getting involved in this program answers the first question. In the upcoming year, I can definitely use this project with my seniors. Previously, they have just created video diaries. With digital storytelling's focus on writing, the students will still get interested and excited, and there will be a significant academic component. This solves the problem I had with previous video projects. It should come as no surprise that the most significant concern is time. With relatively few technical problems, we spent 14 hours on this. That translates into about three weeks worth of class. Of course, much of this would be done for homework, but on the flip side, the kids won't work as fast as we did, and more computer problems will occur. In a curriculum that's already packed, this will definitely be the biggest challenge.
Today I realized how unspontaneous I am when it comes to narrative writing! I've had images in my mind and an idea about which I would like to express, but I can come up with no worthwhile story on the spot here. My narrative, therefore, lacks focus. I feel like one of my kids.
I am used to working with students on iMovies usually using video clips and titles, more than pictures and voice overs. What I learned most today is that the storyboard is so important - you can write a script (also important) but without the storyboard where you can write your script plus what picture you would like to use and even the kind of transition you should use, really makes you think before you complete planning. This class will be very helpful for me in working with the various classes in the AV Center this school year. I see the benefit of the voice over and can't wait to try mine tomorrow.
It was terrific to get a taste of the possibilities of this tool. I appreciated seeing the variety of examples. Most important, however, was the nitty-gritty hands-on experience. I appreciate the fact that we plunged right in and got to work, Learning to un-write is the hardest part, once you've figured out your story. I am only tentatively into technlogy, but I think digital storytelling will enable me to be a better teacher. I'm looking forward to honing my script, finishing the storyboard, and searching out images tomorrow. If I am so excited about seeing my finished product, I can imagine the students will share that pride of creation.
Excellent use of examples. Possibly didn't need so many, but they were enjoyable, so I didn't mind. Having this hands-on component is essential for this type of program
Today was exciting. I have found a new way to communicate stories, a way that will be very exciting for my students. The story board and script writing was difficult but helped with organization and staying on track. Not only would this be great for my students to use to create stories, but for me to use as a teaching tool.
The most important thing I learned today was the power that digital storytelling can give, to the creator, to the viewer, to the others sharing the experience. Not only does it build a community among learners, it also nurtures a confidence in individuals to tell their own story while learning multiple technological formats. I wish the format of the presentation was clearer. What I mean by that is, I would have prefered a step by step walk through of samples, evluations & rubrics, previous and current teaching documents, and discussion about the methods of assessment. I would have also liked to leave and write someplace else, which is a problem my own students sometimes bemoan. Thanks
I learned about how to actually create a script for a digital story. Its a lot harder than I imagined! Its also hard to pick a story to tell. Any story can be interesting, depending on how you tell it. That is my hope that my silly little Doughboy story will keep people's interest for a few minutes. I can totally see so many different educational elements in this process. Wow. There is a lot to it.
