Day 1 Evaluation ROE

Please describe the most important thing you learned today. Also, describe the most important thing you still need to learn to be able to implement the process of digital storytelling in your classes. Please add any other comments that you would like to express. Thanks, Dave.

I'm a very slow learner.  This process of writing the narrative and editing it and putting it into script form is taking me forever.  I'm just at the editing at this point.  It's the second day and it's 3:15 and I'm not finished with the rewrite.  I understand how much I'm learning and I am gaining an appreciation for the processs.  This process will help students to learn to pick out what is important in their writing, what theme are they presenting, what is their central thought or set of thoughts.  I'm also appreciating that the first few tries with this will be frought with problems.  I don't even know what I don't know at this point.  I'm too raw, too new to this process.  I'll see where I am tomorrow.  I hope to at least have an hour or two at the writing of this tonight.  That may help me ask the questions I need to ask tomorrow.

At this point I need some percolating time.  My ideas need to sit with me for a while. I don't want to go on at this point.  I need to close.  Thank you.

Excellent first day.  It was more difficult than I thought to write a personal narrative when you haven't done it for a while.  I look forward to seeing how it all will be put together.  I am interested in getting more ideas on how you can use it in other subject areas so I can assist other teachers in the building.

What an interesting day! This will be a great tool for engaging students. Seeing the examples of digital stories was great. I look forward to putting my story to the storyboard, selecting visuals and getting a finished product.

David,

My head is in a wonderful whirl of images and ideas! I am thrilled to be learning this and can easily picture how very empowering it will be for my 4th graders. We teach 6 Trait writing and this seems very easily related to the writing aspects that we want our students to consider. I also see such a powerful application for ESL students...a way for them to express themselves in a universal language! I will have the ESL cluster in my 4th grade class...I can't wait to tap into their unique experiences.

I am a bit overwhelmed technologically...much to digest. My sense is that everything I need to know is here on your site! Thank you for that! I'm intrigued to learn more about setting up a wiki! As you spoke today, I kept highlighting references you made to things that sounded interesting. Looking at it now, my notes are a yellow glow!

Thank you for the offer to burn an examples disc for us. As we each return to our schools, I think showing that and speaking, as you have, about the experiences of these individuals, is much more valuable than some of the examples that we could find in portfolios online. The story about Steve Hernandez is especially poignant. The one that I had a personal affinity to was the young girl who moved so much. I was surprised how it dovetailed with the narrative I had been playing around with in my mind. It's an important lesson for kids to feel how we are all a part of the same tapestry. I guess that's what struck me the most. These aren't visual experiences as much as they are feeling experiences...and I'm facinated how that happens so powerfully in just two minutes!

Looking forward to day two! Thank you for having Matt there, also...the two of you created a very comfortable learning environment :)

I think the digital storytelling process is awesome for kids to experience. It makes the students take a deeper look at things that happen in their lives and makes them  look for deeper meanings in things they experience. I'll probably spend a few weeks after the class working on a better narrative to use for another example digital story. I know we need to do things quickly so we get through the process. The examples you showed were great! I'm really excited to use this as a final component of my narrative writing unit..............painting pictures in our minds, creating movies........ My 8th graders will love it. :-)

from CHRISTINE [67.167.68.169] on 2005-06-27

I was very impressed to see some of the digital storyboards completed by students! I like the idea of dissecting a narrative to get to a deeper meaning.  I am very excited to have another form of media for students to use to convey their message. I am having fun reworking my thoughts and I am really getting into all the emotion and imagery that makes a great narrative!

I am interested to see how involved the actual production time is. I know the storyboard will help a great deal but it I can see how anyone could spend hours working on their final story.

This is the most professional, highest level course I have been exposed to of it's kind. One thing I learned is how to write a narrative. Next I need to learn to write a script in order to proceed with each step of the procedure.

from DIANE [206.166.51.176] on 2005-06-27

The most important thing I learned today, was the digital storytelling process.  I learned how important the storyboard is to the plan.  I can see how powerful this is.  I'm still trying to figure out how I can use this in my 7th grade Early American History classes.  I'm looking forward to learning the mechanics of the technology-  how to use the still frame images and the voice-over and the music.  I'm excited about finding the images.

from JUDY BURNSIDE [206.166.51.172] on 2005-06-27

I learned how to stimulate students' thinking so that they can start thinking about "their story." Learning the process, seeing good examples, and participating in the whole process was very helpful to me.

I need to learn how to narrow down the story to a usable script, how to use imagery to the best advantage, and to use the software.

from ANA HILL [206.166.51.169] on 2005-06-27

Much of Day 1 was review for me as I attended the Tech Conference earlier this year.  However, it was cool to see the Digital Storytelling examples again.  I was apprehensive to write the narrative but know that it helps greatly to go through the process myself in order to teach the process to my students in the future.

from TIM [206.166.51.114] on 2005-06-27

Dave,

Day 1 was awesome!  I can see a ton of applications for what I do with high school students.  Just the right mix of presentational schtuff and hands on.

I want to learn how to mix the images, video, sound, etc., onto the finished product, and I'm concerned that my school's technology will not be able to support what you are trying to get us to be able to do (so.... some very specific technical surveying of our system would be helpful).

Very helpful having Matt's perspective, as well.
