ISTE Webinar Session Description:

Social media tools, along with handheld technologies such as smartphones and tablets, continue to push educational practice and how schools operate towards a 24-7, always-on, connected, digital environment. Join David Jakes for an important consideration of the questions surrounding the development and deployment of frameworks to support the effective school use of mobile and social media technologies. Develop an understanding of policies, guidelines, and recommendations that you can use to effectively position your school to utilize social media and leverage student-owned technology.

Then, for your consideration:
Reality vs vision
What is your current reality in your school and what is your vision for learning?  That drives everything. 

Your tools vs. their tools
What do you have?  And what do they have?  How do you know?  Where are your gaps?

Developing frameworks
Do you need scaffolds?  If so, what do they look like?  What is the relationship between recommendations, expectations, guidelines, and policy?  

Social Media
  • What is social media?
  • Why should you use it?  Should you use it?  What are the affordances specifically relating to learning?  Is that important?  
  • Who will develop guidelines?
  • What do guidelines look like?  
  • Social means social, or does it?  | Who is in charge? Who contributes, comments, monitors, how, and when?  How is this use communicated with stakeholders?  What happens when things get said that you don't like?  Who can and should you engage with?  Do you have a transparent public statement that communicates your perspectives?
  • The domains of social media use:  personal, individual and school related, clubs/activities/athletics and school and district use.
  • Will you help students develop an academic footprint online?  Are you responsible for teaching...social media?
